Campfire safety
Can you build a fire today?
A quick answer before you unload the firewood, plus the rules that keep our woods standing.
Our campfire rules
- Fires must be made in the fire rings provided on each site.
- Do not move the fire rings.
- Never leave a fire unattended — not even for a minute.
- Put fires out when you are done, and before you go to bed.
- No glass, cans, rocks or garbage in the fire rings.
- Firewood is for sale at the Camp Store.
- Wood brought from across state lines cannot be used here.
- Keep children and pets within arm's reach of a lit fire.
Light it safe, kill it dead
Keep it small
A fire the size of your forearm gives all the warmth and light you need, and it stays inside the ring.
Keep water close
Two buckets of water within arm's reach before the match is struck. A bucket of sand or dirt works too.
Clear the ring
Pull dry leaves and pine needles back a few feet from the ring so a stray spark has nothing to catch.
Drown it, stir it, feel it
Pour water on the embers, stir with a stick, pour again. Hold the back of your hand low over the ashes — if it is warm, it is not out.
What the state fire ratings mean
Pennsylvania posts a fire danger rating for every county. This campground sits in Monroe County, in the Pocono forests — the same woods the rating is watching.
- LowFires are unlikely to start and burn slowly. Normal campfire care is enough.
- ModerateFires can start and spread. Use extra care and keep water close.
- HighFires ignite easily and spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.
- Very highFires are very difficult to control. Outdoor burning should not occur.
- ExtremeEvery fire start can become a large wildfire. Outdoor burning should not occur.
Not sure about tonight?
Call or stop by the Camp Store and ask. We check the rating before we sell firewood on a dry weekend.
